After attending her best friend’s brother’s birthday party, which is set up as a tournament, Alex rides home in her family’s old suit of armor, holding a shield and lance. Despite all this, Alex loves her life, seeing all the good in it. While I certainly liked the book, I just wasn’t as blown away as I have been by several of her others.Īlexandra Lawrence is a carefree, optimistic young woman who has the unfortunate burden of taking care of her eccentric household, which includes a deaf butler, a blind footman, a frequently drunk bottom-spanking uncle, and an overdramatic and bitter mother. In fact, I haven’t touched it since I read it that first time and so I thought I would have another go to figure out why that is. When I think of the author, Paradise, Perfect, and A Kingdom of Dreams instantly pop into my mind as beloved favorites, yet I rarely think about my very first McNaught, Something Wonderful. Like most romance readers, I have read many books by Judith McNaught and have loved several of them. Not to mention the distractions in the dark wood of his life's journey, especially his liaison with Cora Taylor, the madam of the Hotel de Dream, the fanciest sporting house in Jacksonville, Fla., who became his common-law wife. Streetwise sketches, stories and journalism for New York City newspapers and magazines novels and novellas: "Maggie: A Girl of the Streets" (self-published), "The Red Badge of Courage," "George's Mother," "The Third Violet," "The Monster" dozens of short stories, including three classics, "The Blue Hotel," "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky" and "The Open Boat" war correspondence from Greece and Cuba poetry: "The Black Riders" and "War Is Kind," and hundreds of letters. Reading "The Double Life of Stephen Crane," Christopher Benfey's analytical biography of one of America's legendary writers, it still seems incredible how much Crane packed into his eight writing years before his death in 1900 at the age of 28: The Double Life of Stephen Crane By Christopher Benfey 294 pages. But it’s one of those words that once you hear it, you wanna hear it a lot more.” “Friend” wasn’t a word I’d heard all that often. “I let his words tingle in my heart for just a second. It’s a story with so many themes–death, grief, family, and what it means to turn friends into your family. Going home is a “no-go” for Rodeo–too many memories–but Coyote is determined to get to find a memory box she and her mother and sisters buried in the park before it’s too late.Ĭoyote has to trick her dad into going home, and along the way her scheming causes them to pick up a host of travelers that will get them closer each day. Coyote Sunrise and her dad, Rodeo, live on a retrofitted school bus. Give this to your teens who like military stuff, WWII stories, and books about male friendship. But I think the preface and the author's note had some great resources and more details (including photos), and the story did a good job getting me to want to read more. Historical fiction isn't my favorite genre, partly because I'd rather just read non-fiction. For a fictional story, this book did a great job conveying day to day details not just of being imprisoned stateside, but of one way someone might face overt and pervasive racism. I recall learning about internment camps in high school, but I only remembered the broadest strokes. I bumped it up a star rating just for being the right book at the right time. It's a good choice for those reasons, but I think it's an even better choice for the depiction of racism and the darkness of what America did to it's own citizens during WWII. I particularly loved the battle details, the way deaths weren't glossed over but each loss got a moment, and the gross but realistic descriptions of stuff like trench foot. I’m so excited about the anime adaptation! This review is for the manga version □ So this past year I’ve been reading a lot of manga! One of my favorites, which is available to read for free on Crunchyroll, is “Orange” - and a few days ago Crunchyroll announced they will be simul-casting the new anime based on the manga as well! I thought that makes it a good time to share my love of this series. I’m not as big of a reader as I used to be when I was younger, however, the last few seasons of anime have not held much to capture my interests, and being single again I find myself with too much spare time.
